What does Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in COLO-SPEED involve?

PPIE (Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement) in bowel cancer research allows researchers to actively work with people affected by the disease, such as patients, caregivers, and members of the public, to help shape and improve the research. Instead of researchers working alone behind closed doors, PPIE allows us to listen to real experiences, concerns, and priorities from the community. This helps ensure the research is more relevant, ethical, and focused on what truly matters to people that have been affected by bowel cancer.

At the start of 2025, the COLO-SPEED Research Team launched a new Patient Involvement Group based in the northeast of England, for members of the public with experience of, or an interest in, bowel cancer. In our group meetings (which will occur 5-6 times a year) we share some of the findings of our work, discuss future research questions, work on new proposals, and think about how we can make meaningful changes to our research and bowel cancer care and experiences for patients.

What is the COLO-SPEED Research Network?

Are you interested in joining or finding out more about our COLO-SPEED Patient Group, or would you just like to find out a bit more about our research in general?

Our recently launched COLO-SPEED Research Network is an online hub designed to keep you connected to the latest updates in our ongoing bowel cancer research.

If you join this platform, you will have access to:

  • Research Updates: Register your interest in participating in our future research projects and stay informed about the latest progress and findings in our studies.
  • Patient Meetings: Learn about and participate in our Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) meetings, where you can contribute to the development of new research and help us share our findings far and wide.
  • Research Events: Find out about upcoming events where you can meet the researchers, hear about new studies, and get involved in all we are up to.
